While some countries are obsessed with total control over information, others do their best to connect the world by increasing Internet accessibility. Authorities of some countries seek every possible way to limit the right of their citizens to access information. In fact, they set out various reasons for that, including state security protection or preservation of national morality and virtue. These countries block access to some popular Internet services and social networks, spy on their people, and even dictate what they should watch, read or listen to. However, such leading tech companies as Facebook, SpaceX, and OneWeb are moving in the opposite direction. The companies are planning to create a wider online space and connect billions of people worldwide, who still have no access to the Internet, by launching small satellites into low Earth orbit. Thus, SpaceX has already successfully put into orbit around 300 satellites. Meanwhile, Facebook confirmed that it was working on its own satellite internet project Athena. This smaller satellite named after the Greek goddess of wisdom and knowledge could be launched as early as March 2020. Facebook officials have not yet stated the exact dates, however. “While we have nothing to share about specific projects at this time, we believe satellite technology will be an important enabler of the next generation of broadband infrastructure,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. Such projects will soon enable everybody to obtain free and equal access to information on a global scale, and this time the universal right will be very difficult to restrict.
